History

The Bowen Island Recycling Depot (BIRD) was founded in 1984 by three women, led by Cherry Budzinski, who were tired of taking there recycling over town. Prior to 1984, there was no recycling on Bowen Island, so recyclable material was sent to the landfill along with other waste. The depot allowed Bowen Island residents to deposit their recyclable materials, including refundables, in their own community, enabling residents to more easily reduce household waste and its negative impact on the natural environment.

In 1994 Bowen Waste Service became the local garbage contractor for the Greater Vancouver Regional District and, after Bowen Island was incorporated in 1999, the Bowen Island Municipality.

In 2007, the Municipality decided to move the recycling depot from its original site to a larger building where it stands today.
