Metals
BIRD takes all kinds of metal.
The bin in the depot is a mixed metal bin that is meant for household metal ONLY, such as cans, and smaller metal pieces. Larger pieces of metal are collected in the yard, next to the metal bin.
Please connect with depot staff, who will help you to put your metal in the right spot.
Large appliances like washers and BBQs may be dropped off in the yard for a cost. Please call Jan at Bowen Waste (604-947-2255) and she will be able to help you.
The mixed metals go to Vancouver, where they are sorted and sold on.
Recycling one aluminum can save enough energy to run a TV for three hours, or run a laptop computer for 11 hours, or vacuum for 6 hours.
Recycling an aluminum can saves 96% of the energy used to make a can from ore and produces 95% less air pollution and 97% less water pollution.
An aluminum can recycled today will be back on the grocery shelf in 90 days or less. There is no limit to the number of times an aluminum can can be recycled.
Making new steel products from recycled steel instead of virgin ore reduces energy use by 75%, water use by 40%, water pollution by 76%, air pollution by 86%, and mining wastes by 97%.
Recycling 1 ton of steel saves 2,500 pounds of iron ore, 1,400 pounds of coal (or 3.6 barrels of oil) and 120 pounds of limestone. Recycled steel is used to make new steel products including cars, lawnmowers, appliances, and construction materials.
